THE STORY
Painted for a themed show, “Seeking Beauty”, Bocklin’s Swans is a special piece, dear to my heart.
It can symbolize the beauty of a swan song, or the unfolding of a new life.
This is poetry fused with admiration for Arnold Bocklin’s, Isle of Life. Check out my blog post about Beauty and Bocklin for more.
Bocklin’s Swans
“... But all beautiful things, inherently, have this function– to excite the viewers toward sublime thought. Glory to the world, that good teacher.
Among the swans there is none called the least, or the greatest.” -Mary Oliver (“Evidence”)
My personal translation of the word “Beauty” has much in common with perfection, and that this exhibit was my invitation to paint a piece based heavily on Arnold Bocklin’s Isle of Life. Beauty approaches holiness for me, going beyond concepts of attractiveness. It’s felt as a deep joy with a clinging vine of existential sorrow.
